Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Per fess Azure and Argent, in chief a vol Argent superimposed by a sun in splendor Tenn, and in base on a saltire Gules a four-bastioned fort Tenn.  Attached below the shield a Blue scroll doubled and inscribed "AIR WARRIOR AIR ATTACK" in Silver.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue and golden orange are the colors traditionally associated with Aviation units.  The wings surrounding the sun suggest freedom, bravery, aviation and the aggressiveness of attack helicopters.  The red saltire is adapted from the Florida state flag; the four-bastioned fort represents the Castillo de San Marcos, which recalls the heritage of the Florida militia.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 26 June 1990.
